Private 12851 Horace Moulds

Horace Moulds was born in 1895 in Peterborough, son of Mrs E Moulds of 186 Belsize Avenue, Woodstone, Peterborough.

Private Moulds enlisted in the 1st Northamptonshire Regiment. He was wounded on 27th October 1915.

Killed in action on 23rs July 1916, on the first day of The Battle of Pozieres on the Somme.

He was 21 years old.

We discovered Horace this week researching my wife's family tree. He is an uncle on her maternal grandfather's side.

Buried in Thiepval Cemetery, Grave I.J.1. Only one other soldier in his row has a name, the remainder are "Unknown British Soldiers".

We are going to visit "Great Uncle Horace" next year and pay our respects.

  1. Matt - that's a very fine tribute to Great Uncle Horace - nicely done. If you do go to Thiepval, could I please commission you to take a photo of the grave of my Great-Great Uncle James, of the 10/Cheshires? Better be careful here, or you'll have a huge shopping list - no pressure! At the moment I don't have a grave number, but am working on it.

  2. It's amazing how much information about WW1 servicemen is now available online. I only found out about my own Great Uncle relatively recently as he was never mentioned in the family when I was a child. Great that you will be going to see Horace and, yes, can I add my Great Uncle George to your list - now you've started something!
