Fire and Fury in 20mm

Back in 2024 I hinted that I would be adding a third ACW project to cover my all time favourite ruleset (sorry Ray), Fire & Fury. The plan was to use 15mm figures and I had built up the beginnings of a nice little collection.

However my eyesight started to drop off and even after treatment (and new glasses), 15mm and smaller is no longer an option.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to try again, but this time in 20mm (favourite historical period, rule set and figure scale all in one!).

While I did toy with the idea of using Airfix figures in the end I decided to go with another favourite, Newline Designs.

The bases for basic infantry are 40 x 20mm metal bases which will make storage/transportation so much easier.

These are Maine Infantry made up of six bases, with those lovely 15mm GMB flags.

Next up I am returning to First Bull Run with another Union infantry section.

    1. Yes I have kept on eye on your ACW collection for years now. Newline are very...."moreish" aren't they?

  3. Very nice. I too like Newline but still have a fondness for my old Airfix figures.

  5. Great looking figures Matt. Your shading of both dark and light blue set them off beautifully.
    Best wishes, James
p.s. I'm with Ray about Fire and Fury. He and I are in the 5?(2)% who are not enamoured by them!

    2. James, I think it is a little higher than that. Definitely a "Marmite" set of rules.

    3. Steve, never tried the Regimental level set - although I do own a copy.

In fact, looking back I have not played the rules in over ten years!

  6. These look very nice but I see you are not using the traditional square bases - will you still be removing whole bases in play? As you know I have recently dabbled in F&F and think the original version of the rules is by far the best!

    1. I have only ever used the original set although I do have the revised Brigade variant and the Regimental set. Will be interesting how they measure up.

The figures are 3 to a base on 40x20mm metal bases. The rules state 1" x 3/4" bases for 15mm so this is me trying to have a reasonable base and still (hopefully) keeping the measurements the same as 15mm games. Fingers crossed.

  7. A lovely looking unit Matt…
The Newline miniatures work a treat… Although I must admit that I find the idea of using Airfix very tempting in deed ( As long as you can get good castings).

    All the best. Aly
